Progress Log

31/01/2004 .: *discreet cough*

Progress has been slow lately as I've been busy with several other projects, but I'll be putting some more time/work into Hyperion again now. I might upload some random images of work in progress in the coming days/weeks.

03/12/2003 .: GALAXY MAP

The initial draft of the galaxy map has reached its definitive shape - minus a couple of "hidden" systems which I'll add in later, and a couple of "easter egg" systems which I'm not sure I will add in at all.
The final sketch has been scanned and made into an Illustrator file; this should make it easier to add the planets and other related information and shift them around a bit without having to redo the entire map each time. (see also: this thread on the EV Dev Board.)

This galaxy will contain about 720 systems, give or take a few. Add to that another couple hundred copies that will replace existing systems as the storyline progresses and things change. At the moment, my most accurate guess would be about 200, it's hard to say since the mission strings are still little more than a bunch of vague ideas and random gimmicks.

I have compiled a list of about fifty worlds - all the ones that are mentioned in the books; most of these are Web worlds. I'll add these first, then make up the rest as I go along.
I have no idea of what the total number of stellar bodies will be, but it will definitely be less than Mr. Simmons envisioned - he put the number of Web worlds at about 200 and the number of explored solar systems at 2,800+ (that's more systems than the Nova engine can handle anyway).

20/11/2003 .: ORPHANS OF THE HELIX

I finally got around to reading the short story about what becomes of the Amoiete Spectrum Helix after The Rise Of Endymion. Definitely recommended reading, and a worthy (but far too short) successor to the Hyperion Cantos.

It also contained some interesting technical details on the construction of spinships, which I'm sure will come in useful...

In the meanwhile, galaxy redesign is coming along (almost) as planned. So far, this is the first version I'm 100% happy with, which is already more than could be said of previous attempts.

13/11/2003 .: RESET

After several months in limbo, we're going at it once again... Let's hope this incarnation of the plug-in will survive...
